Implants and Implant Restorations

An implant is a titanium or zirconia screw placed in the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth. Once it has fused with the bone, a crown, bridge or implant-supported denture is fitted on top, restoring chewing and appearance.

When is an implant considered?

For a single missing tooth, an implant is a good way to fill the gap without cutting down the neighbouring teeth. Where several teeth are missing, implant-supported bridges can be planned, and where all teeth are missing, fixed or removable implant-supported dentures.

How is suitability assessed?

Bone volume and quality, gum health and general health are assessed together. 3D imaging (CBCT) measures the height and width of the bone. Uncontrolled diabetes, heavy smoking and some medicines can affect healing, so they are always discussed during the examination.

Implants are not placed in young patients whose jaw growth is not complete. If there is not enough bone, bone grafting may be considered.

How does the process work?

  1. Assessment

A treatment plan is prepared after examination, X-rays and a CBCT scan if needed.

  2. Placement

The implant is placed in the bone under local anaesthesia.

  3. Healing

The implant is left to fuse with the bone; a temporary solution is used during this time if needed.

  4. Restoration

Impressions are taken and the crown, bridge or denture is made and fitted.

  5. Regular check-ups

The gum and bone around the implant are checked at regular intervals.

Care

Implants cannot decay, but the gum around them can become inflamed. This is called peri-implantitis and can lead to implant loss. Floss, interdental brushes and regular professional cleaning are the basis of a long-lasting implant.

Frequently asked questions

Is implant treatment painful?

The implant is placed under local anaesthesia. Mild swelling and sensitivity may follow for a few days; this is usually controlled with the recommended medication.

Can implants be placed at any age?

Jaw growth must be complete. In adults, bone and general health matter more than age.

How long do implants last?

With good oral care, no smoking and regular check-ups, implants can last for many years. The crowns or bridges on top may need replacing over time.
