Smile Design

Smile design is a planning process that considers the shape, length and colour of the teeth and the gum line together with the proportions of the face. It is not a single procedure; it is usually a roadmap that combines treatments such as whitening, composite veneers, porcelain veneers or gum contouring.

What does smile design cover?

There is no single measure of a beautiful smile. The ratio between the length and width of the teeth, the position of the front teeth relative to the lip line, how much gum shows when you smile and the colour of the teeth are assessed together. The design aims for harmony between these elements and the face.

The method is chosen according to the current condition of the teeth. For healthy teeth, approaches that preserve tooth structure, such as whitening and composite veneers, are often enough. Teeth with old fillings, fractures or marked discolouration may need porcelain veneers or crowns.

Who is it for?

  • People unhappy with the colour or uneven colour of their teeth
  • People with gaps, chips or worn edges on their front teeth
  • People whose teeth differ in length or shape
  • People who notice an uneven gum line when they smile

Where teeth are noticeably crowded, orthodontic treatment may be recommended first. Gum disease is treated before any aesthetic work.

How does the process work?

  1. Examination and analysis

An examination, the necessary X-rays and photos of the face and smile are taken.

  2. Planning

The method for each tooth is decided. The aim is to reach the desired result with the least intervention.

  3. Mock-up

Before permanent work, the new shape is tried in the mouth with a temporary material and assessed together in front of a mirror.

  4. Application

The approved plan is carried out session by session with the chosen methods.

  5. Review

Fit, chewing and speech are checked, and care advice is given.

Things to keep in mind

The result depends on the starting condition of the teeth, gum health and daily habits. If you clench or grind at night, a night guard may be recommended to protect the restorations. Regular check-ups are the most important condition for keeping the result for a long time.

Frequently asked questions

Are teeth cut down for smile design?

Not always. In many cases methods that need no drilling, such as whitening and composite veneers, are enough. Even when porcelain veneers are needed, usually only a very thin layer of the outer surface is removed. How much intervention is needed becomes clear after the examination.

Can I see the result in advance?

Yes. Before any permanent work, the new shape can be tried in the mouth with a temporary material. This mock-up lets you assess the proportions and appearance together and change them if needed.

Will it look natural?

A natural look depends on a shade that suits the face, slight translucency at the edges and surface texture. The shade is chosen with the Vita shade guide and according to your own tooth colour.
