This is the question people ask most when they consider changing the colour, shape or small gaps of their front teeth. Both methods reshape the front surface of the tooth, but they are made differently and behave differently over the years.

The differences at a glance

Composite veneersPorcelain veneers
Where it is madeIn the mouth, by the dentistIn a dental laboratory
Tooth preparationUsually not neededUsually a very thin surface reduction
Number of visitsUsually a single visitUsually several visits
Colour stabilityMay stain slightly over timeKeeps its colour for a long time
RepairEasily repaired in the mouthUsually replaced if it breaks

When do composite veneers make sense?

They are a good starting point for people with healthy teeth who want small corrections and wish to preserve tooth structure. Results in a single visit and the option to move to porcelain later are important advantages.

When do porcelain veneers make sense?

Where there is marked discolouration, many old fillings or a larger change of shape, porcelain veneers can give a more predictable result. Their colour and surface shine last for a long time.

Questions to ask before deciding

  • How much tooth structure needs to be removed?
  • Are my gums healthy enough for this?
  • How will my clenching or grinding habit affect the result?
  • How often will I need check-ups?
  • What are my options if I want changes in the future?

Which method suits you becomes clear after an examination and a conversation about your expectations. In most cases the right answer is the option that meets the goal while affecting the tooth the least.
